Krupnik was instrumental in bringing social/human research and collaboration with polar residents to the IPY agenda; he played major role in developing the Smithsonian program for IPY, including major workshop, Smithsonian at the Poles: Contributions to IPY Sciences (May 2007) and the subsequent publication of its proceedings. Krupnik’s contribution to the IPY 2007–2008 is an international project called SIKU (Sea Ice Knowledge and Use in the North), on which he coordinates activities of several research teams from Canada, U.S., Russia, Greenland, and France working with experts from over 20 indigenous communities from Bering Strait to Greenland.	+

Образование

Окончил географический факультет МГУ по специальности "Экология и физическая геграфия". Защитил кандидатскую диссертацию по антропологии в Институте этнографии Академии наук СССР в 1977 году. Защитил докторскую диссертацию в Институте проблем экологии им. Северцева в Москве в 1991 году.

Профессиональная деятельность

Куратор Центра изучения Арктики в Смитсонианском институте (США). Член редколлегий научных журналов, организатор научных конференций по проблемам изучения коренного населения Арктики.

Участие в еврейском национальном движении в СССР

Во времена советского государственного антисемитизма участвовал в попытке организации Еврейской этнографической комиссии под эгидой журнала "Советиш Геймланд" (совместно с Михаилом Членовым). После запрета властями этого мероприятия занялся еврейской этнографией в рамках неофициальных еврейских структур.
