1932 год — окончил [[Варшавский университет]]. Защитил докторскую диссертацию. [[Чедвик, Джеймс|Чедвик]] заприметил И. Ротблата по научным результатам пригласил работать в свою лабораторию.

После катастрофы в [[Хиросима|Хиросиме]] и [[Нагасаки|Нагасаки]], начал активное выступление с лекциями, направленными против угрозы применения  ядерного оружия. Под углом своего личного мировоззрения Иосиф Ротблат отказывается от участия в [[Манхэттенский проект|Манхэттенском проекте]] и, подписав обещание о неразглашении сведений о ведущихся работах по созданию [[атомное оружие|атомного оружия]], вернулся в Англию.

Понимая что атомная энергия может быть использовано и в созидательном аспекте, Иосиф Ротблат начинает работать в медицинском институте (становится экспертом по вопросам влияния [[радиация|радиации]] на здоровье людей).  В 1955 году [[Рассел, Бертран|Бертран Рассел]] и [[Эйнштейн, Альберт|Альберт Эйнштейн]] собирают группу ученых для обсуждения этой проблемы. Результатом явилось заявление, названное Рассел-Эйнштейновским манифестом, положившим начало [[Пагуошское движение учёных|Пагуошской Конференции]], призывающей к контролю над ядерным вооружением и с 1957 года созываемой ежегодно: в течение многих лет (1957—1973 гг.) Иосиф Ротблат являлся Генеральным секретарем Конференции — в 1988 году он стал президентом этой Конференции.
