Название заимствовано от бывшей ранее на этом месте арабской деревни Карьят ал-‘Инаб. Основан в 1920 г. евреями с Украины, к которым присоединились репатрианты из Польши, Германии и Аргентины. Кирьят-‘Анавим был первым новым еврейским поселением в районе [[Иерусалим]]а.
